Modding the Thumbport
|
Most Likely Scenarios 1. Many flutists like to place their right thumbs almost straight across from the index finger (see Ill. 1). The Thumbport can still benefit many of these players. Illustration 1
First of all you need to prepare a spacer (cork, plastic, or rubber) of roughly 15mm x 3mm x 2mm (1/2" x 1/8" x 3/32"). The width (the middle figure) is what you want to play with. I do not recommend it too wide, pushing the extension arm too low. In that case, you would lose the force countering the horizontal rotation. Glue it next to the rib where you will be placing the Thumbport (see Pic. 2). Now you have lowered the extension arm. You may still want to add a foam pad under the extension arm. Besides adjusting the distance, it may feel more comfortable. Picture 2 Another tip for this mod is to cut the edge of the arm by 2mm. It is best done cutting it at an angle (see Pic. 3). That will make the edge more pleasant to the touch. This modification may get the Thumbport into the flute case without the need to take it off before storage. Picture 3
2. Adding a piece of calculated foam pad may help many to get a better leverage.
